China Gold (Bambusa eutuldoides viridi-vittata) is a clumping bamboo that grows to roughly 8-10 mtrs in height, with a 2-3 metre round base. It features stunningly vibrant gold and green stripes along the culms and is often regarded as the most ornamental golden bamboo there is. China Gold grows with a very tight, full clump and masses of dense foliage. It looks best cleaned out from the base to show off its fantastic culms and foliage shape (see top photo) and feature it with a statue or ornament in front! (see bottom photo). China Gold is a fast growing bamboo, VERY drought hardy once established, and can achieve a privacy screen in under 2 years - provided you follow our Bamboo Planting Guide with soil preparation and care. It is a very hardy and drought tolerant bamboo once established and is fantastic for acreage.

Bamboo for Privacy Screening
In today's busy modern world many of us are in desperate need for shutting the world out. The demands of work, family and the general busy pace of life means that once we arrive home, we want one thing - peace, quiet and.. privacy! Many people can testify that the inclusion of bamboo for privacy screening to block out unwanted views, noise or even nosey neighbours has been a blessed addition to their home and helped them achieve the peace, quiet and privacy that they so desire.
Clumping bamboo have shallow, non-invasive root systems which will generally form a rootball from which the bamboo shoots will grow up from forming a 'clump' of bamboo. As clumping bamboo forms dense clumps and is the fastest growing land plant, clumping bamboo make for great privacy screens, wind breaks and noise barriers that can be achieved in a very short time frame - some bamboo, like Gracilis Bamboo can achieve this in as little as 2 years!
The two most popular types of bamboo for privacy screening are Gracilis Bamboo and Tiger Grass. Gracilis Bamboo for privacy screening is by far the most popular and versatile bamboo. With rapid, straight and tall growth, low maintenance and drought tolerance, Gracilis Bamboo makes for a beautiful and low maintenance privacy screen in a very short time frame. Tiger Grass for privacy screening is becoming especially popular along fences and on poolside terraces. Although Tiger Grass is not actually a bamboo, it is also a grass that grows in a clump providing elegant, lush foliage and shade. Tiger Grass can also be cut back every few years to maintain a nice and neat privacy screen.
If you are wanting to achieve a nice and tidy privacy hedge, bamboo can be trimmed to the desired shape and height. By trimming the faces of the bamboo and removing the odd protrusion of leaves and leaf stems, a row of Gracilis Bamboo will transform into a beautiful clean wall of green, not dissimilar to a nicely trimmed buxus or lily hedge, but with a softer, more gentle look and feel. If a towering 12m wall of green is what you are after then you can achieve that with clumping bamboo as well, Old Hamii will grow a base clump of 2-3 metres up to 10-12 metres high, easily blocking out a 3 storey building!
