Description
Chungii(Bambusa chungii) is a 'blue' clumping bamboo that grows to roughly 8-10 mtrs in height. It features a whiteish blue plume on the culms, making it a very ornamental species. Chungii has very upright, elongated culms with pretty green leaves flushing out from long branches. It is quite a clean stemmed bamboo when mass planted - making it perfect for a walk through screen/grove situation - just like our very own Blue Bamboo Grove! (See the first two photos on the left). Chungii is a fairly fast growing bamboo, and can achieve a grove or light screen in approx 2-3 years - provided you follow our Bamboo Planting Guide with soil preparation and care.

Uses:Chungii is a fantastic ornamental bamboo and is best used for light screening or to create a grove - when room allows it to grow out! It is NOT a narrow bamboo. It is perfect for larger blocks or acreage where a feature is needed or when you simply want to let your garden stand out from the rest! (and to minimise your mowing!). It is a great bamboo to create underplanting.

Planting:Chungii has a roughly 2-3m round circular clump when fully grown. For a dense screen, plant your Chungii 1.5m apart. If you are planting along a fence, come out a minimum of 1.5m to allow the natural clump size to grow. For a grove, plant two linear lines of Chungii. Each 'line' should have Chungii planted between 1 and 1.5m apart along the length and there should be a space of 3-4 metres between the 'lines', to allow them to grow out into their natural size and still have a gap in the middle for the walkway. Chungii can be grown in full sun to part shade, but note that it creates a lot of shade itself especially when planted in a grove fashion. Follow our Bamboo Planting Guide given at the time of purchase for recommendations on the best soil preparation and care for your bamboo to achieve the quickest and best results.
